English Department Curricula Grades 9-12

Norwell Public Schools’ grades 9-12 English curricula follow the standards for English Language Arts content, which includes standards for reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language from the 2017 English Language Arts and Literacy Framework. All courses 9-12 meet or exceed the standards presented in these Frameworks. While the Frameworks do not prescribe a set reading list for all students, the English curriculum is designed so students are exposed to a variety of text types, including texts of high literary merit and significance.

The English Department at Norwell High School believes, along with the Massachusetts DESE, that students who are ready for College, Careers, and Civic participation should share certain attributes as defined in the Curriculum Frameworks.

  • They demonstrate independence.
  • They build strong content knowledge.
  • They respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline.
  • They comprehend as well as critique.
  • They value evidence.
  • They use technology and digital media strategically and capably.
  • They come to understand other perspectives and cultures.
