Vocabulary: Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core, Magnetosphere.We are beginning a new unit in science, Geology. We will be learning about the layers of the Earth, how the plates move and the associated tectonic phenomenon including earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. The students will be designing a coastal city soon to facilitate a project based role-playing for our unit. In one scenario the students will write a newspaper article about a small earthquake in the area of the city. In another scenario, the students will write a speech as if they were the mayor of the city informing the citizens what measures the city is taking to deal with a major earthquake event and what citizens can do on their own to be prepared as well. These writing tasks will replace the usual vocabulary homework for science over the next several weeks.We will also be using an earthquake simulator in class, building structures using Legos, and then testing the structural integrity of our constructs with the simulator. Your plan today is to do research on the weather topic of your choice and take notes when you find some interesting facts. You may search websites, yes including Wikipedia, which has great general information, do an image search and watch some short clips showing weather in action.
Then create, on computer paper, a rough draft of your poster with your favorite facts and drawings.
If you think you are done and don’t know what to do watch this: Bill Nye Weather there are some extra headphones near the pencil sharpener if you cannot find your own, but put them back when you are done.
Remember Rule #1: Be nice is in full effect. If you can work hard too, do it.

We have seen the water temperature drop from 58 degrees to 46 degrees. The students have been learning how the ocean slows down our cooling process in the winter and the impact the ocean has on our winter weather. As we approach 42-degree ocean temperature readings and below, we are more likely to see accumulating snows and the coveted snow day alerts will soon follow.Mr. FNot a rainbow.
