Learning Activity Title: Presidential Inauguration Firsts

Description of Activity: What is the learning experience? What will teachers and students do during the course of the activity? Through what performances or products will students demonstrate what they know and are able to do?

Learning Experience: to locate and learn some precedents and notable events, and fascinating first facts about United States presidential inaugurations. This activity was completed on January 20th, the day of the President George Bush's second inauguration.

The students will use the Internet to answer a series of questions about presidential inaugurations. The teacher will assist the students in the independent task, as needed.

The performance product will be a trivia search question sheet. The students will be able to discuss the facts they have found, as well as add other information they may have about the presidents on the trivia search.

The educational value of the Presidential Trivia hunt was enhanced by the use of technology because the students could navigate the site in a creative and interesting way to learn about Presidential Inaugural Firsts. Technology helped the students learn the material in a fun and motivating way. They could use the search component of the site to type in key words to help expedite the search for information.

Teacher Tips and Notes: What strategies are recommended regarding logistics, preparation, classroom management, or other implementation concerns?

This activity was done on January 20 as President Bush was being sworn in for his second term. The students enjoyed learning about presidential trivia. Each student needed his/her own computer. However, the activity could be done with partners, if computers are limited.

The follow-up of the lesson contributed greatly to look at reasons for Presidential firsts, including Constitutional amendments and historical events.
