NORWELL PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Technology-Enhanced Learning Activity Summary

Name: Karen Haynes School: Norwell Middle School
Learning Activity Title: Algebra and Graphs
Grade Level(s): 8 Subject Area: Math
Description of Activity: What is the learning experience? What will teachers and students do during the course of the activity? Through what performances or products will students demonstrate what they know and are able to do?

The teachers will ask a student to give her a number. The teacher will apply a function to it (2x+4=y), and then she will give a second variable. The teacher will create a table on the board with columns x and y. The students will continue to give the teacher the x variable and she will figure out the y variable. The students will try to find the equation.

Using an Excel spreadsheet the students will construct a formula that will represent 2x+4=y. The cell B2 will contain the formula =SUM(2*A2+4) and is replicated down column B. Next, the students will then create a graph. Students will be able to add features to their graphs, such as different fonts, colors, labels, etc. Once the students have completed their first graph, they will use the spreadsheet to calculate real life scenarios, such as sales tax and currency conversion.

Students will demonstrate what they know through their tables and graphs.

Technology Standards Addressed: This learning activity will allow students to develop proficiency in the following Norwell Public Schools technology standards:
