NORWELL PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Technology-Enhanced Learning Activity Summary

Name: Tara Ledin School: Norwell Middle School
Learning Activity Title: Average Speed
Grade Level(s): 6 Subject Area: Science
Description of Activity: What is the learning experience? What will teachers and students do during the course of the activity? Through what performances or products will students demonstrate what they know and are able to do?

Students will use PASCO technology via the laptops to determine the average speed of objects in motion. Students will use the motion detectors to graph various speeds of walking by calculating average speed as=d/t.  They will then choose a valid scale to present the information. Students use the laptops to send the finalized data to the appropriate printer.

Technology Standards Addressed: This learning activity will allow students to develop proficiency in the following Norwell Public Schools technology standards:

  1.0 General Computing Skills

2.0 Word Processing and Publications Skills

  3.0 Spreadsheet - Database

Skills and Concepts (see Scope and Sequence)

1.6

2.13, 2.22, 2.3, 2.4, 2.4.2, 2.43

3.21, 3.21.1, 3.21.2

Curriculum Standards: Which curriculum frameworks, strands, and learning standards does the activity address?

Chemistry and Physics: 11. Explain and give examples of how the motion of an object can be described by its position, direction, and speed.

Chemistry and Physics: 12. Graph and interpret distance v time graphs for constant speed.

Materials & Equipment: What specific software, hardware, websites, handouts, and other printed materials are involved in this activity?  Attachments included

Laptops, Pasco activity #1 Are You Speeding?, Motion Detectors, USB links and meter sticks

Teacher Tips and Notes: What strategies are recommended regarding logistics, preparation, classroom management, or other implementation concerns?

Have exemplars on hand. Reserve a large room (such as the cafetorium) ahead of time so students have ample room to move.

Contact Janet Eskin for assistance if this is the first time using the software.
