Technology-Enhanced Learning Activity Summary |
| Name: Kathy Fanning | School: Middle School |
| Learning Activity Title: Using A Spreadsheet for Formulas | |
| Grade Level(s): Grade 7 | Subject Area: Mathematics (Using Algebraic Formulas) |
| Description of Activity:
What is the learning experience? What will teachers and students do during
the course of the activity? Through what performances or products will
students demonstrate what they know and are able to do?
At the conclusion of a Unit of Study involving the introduction, use and formation of algebraic expressions, formulas, and equations; the students will make use of several functions of Excel spreadsheets. Since they are now familiar with what expressions and equations are, it is appropriate for the students to see a direct application of how these concepts are used by many people as a part of their jobs. As students become familiar with how Excel software functions (cells, capturing information, the formula bar, and components of how to enter a formula for correct operations), they can become more adept at using this software for practical applications in their lives. It allows them to see the use of translating algebra into an equation with an application to every day life. (Running a small company, keeping track of assets/deficits, etc.) It also allows them to see how algebraic equations are shortcuts for solving for any value of the variable in a more down-to-earth fashion. |

| Technology Standards Addressed: This
learning activity will allow students to develop proficiency in the
following Norwell Public Schools technology standards: 3.0 Spreadsheet and Data Base Skills |
Skills and Concepts
(see Scope and Sequence) 3.01, 3.03, 3.11, 3.12 |
| Curriculum Standards:
Which curriculum frameworks, strands, and learning standards does the
activity address?
7P1 Extend, represent, analyze, and generalize a variety of patterns with tables, graphs, words, and when possible, symbolic expressions. 7P3 Create and use symbolic expressions for linear relationships and relate them to verbal, tabular, and graphical representations. 7P6 Use linear equations to model and analyze problems involving proportional relationships. Use technology as appropriate. |
|
| Materials & Equipment: What
specific software, hardware, websites, handouts, and other printed materials
are involved in this activity? Attachments
included See attached worksheet/follow-up questions. |
Teacher Tips and Notes:
What strategies are recommended regarding logistics, preparation, classroom
management, or other implementation concerns? Students will need practice with understanding how Excel works (cells, formula bars, Fill down command, etc). They do not know how to navigate around the worksheet. |
