Learning Activity Title: Pen and Ink Castles (Middle Ages), Landscape Paintings (Exploring the West)
Grade Level(s): 5 and 6 Subject Area: Art
Description of Activity: What is the learning experience? What will teachers and students do during the course of the activity? Through what performances or products will students demonstrate what they know and are able to do?

Students will be shown a PowerPoint presentation of real castles  in Europe as well as prior classes castles. A page of hyperlinks to various sites on the Internet will be provided.

6th- Pen and ink drawings of castles, as a connection between 6th grade Middle Ages unit and Art. Students will lightly setup a castle in pencil. Detail is added next, dragons, unicorns, elves, fairies, forest, cliff, waterfalls- etc. The picture will now be outlined with a fine black "uniball" pen. Shading and detail will be created by crosshatching and the texture of brick, scales, water, grasses will be added.

PowerPoint, many different web sites, digital camera to take pictures of student work, PhotoShop (to correct pictures), InFocus machine
