Learning Activity Title: The Earth in the Solar System
Grade Level(s): 3 Subject Area: Science
Description of Activity: What is the learning experience? What will teachers and students do during the course of the activity? Through what performances or products will students demonstrate what they know and are able to do?

Each student adopts a planet, excluding Earth. Student research the planet to discover specific facts such as distance from the sun, length of a day, a year, relative size, number of moons, etc. The whole class does research to learn the same facts about our home planet, earth. The student who adopt the same planet come together to review and share the results of their research.

Using Inspiration with the name of the planet as the main idea, the students map the data on the web. Each student adds pictures to their web.

The class works on the earth web. Each group takes a copy of the earth web and the adopted planet web and compare and contrast the two planets, using a graphic organizer. Finally, each group changed the web to an outline to better discuss how the nine planets were alike and different.
