Learning Activity Title: Favorite Story Survey and Graph
Grade Level(s): 3 Subject Area: Math
Description of Activity: What is the learning experience? What will teachers and students do during the course of the activity? Through what performances or products will students demonstrate what they know and are able to do?

Students will survey all grade three students regarding their favorite reading selection in our reading series. After gathering the information, students will organize the information into a spreadsheet ( Max Count or Excel). Students will create a bar graph with teacher direction. Together, students and teacher will analyze the data and communicate their understanding of that data. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the graph by writing at least four statements about the data.

Technology Standards Addressed: This learning activity will allow students to develop proficiency in the following Norwell Public Schools technology standards:

Curriculum Standards: Which curriculum frameworks, strands, and learning standards does the activity address?

Math Strand #4 Statistics and Probability Standard 4.1: "Collect, organize, and describe data" Collect data to draw bar graphs, etc...., and to explain those graphs.

Standard 4.2: "Construct, read, and interpret displays of data" Explain facts (at least four) elicited from the data on graphs Describe bar graphs ( and pictographs, etc.)

Materials & Equipment: What specific software, hardware, websites, handouts, and other printed materials are involved in this activity?

The Graph Club or Max Count can be used for this depending on student experience.

Teacher Tips and Notes: What strategies are recommended regarding logistics, preparation, classroom management, or other implementation concerns?

Prior experience with the graphing software would be helpful.
