System-Wide
Curricula |
| The Educational Reform Act of 1993 has driven the
development of standards in every curriculum area. English language arts standards and
mathematics standards were developed and distributed in December of 1997. Standards for
science and social studies will also be developed to ensure that our curriculum is aligned
with the state frameworks. Curriculum profiles for math and language arts have been
developed and profiles for science and social studies will be published next year. These
are informational documents that provide parents with an overview of the curriculum areas,
expectations and suggestions for how they might provide assistance at home. |

Instructional Materials Revision |
|
Using the system standards and criteria selected from
current research on best practices, curriculum is revised on a regular basis. Currently
programs are being adopted for language arts in grades five through 12, as well as math
programs in Kindergarten through grade four. This process requires a program adoption
committee comprised of teachers and administrators. Research is reviewed, criteria
selected and programs are reviewed with an eye toward adoption. |

Professional
Development |
|
Several afternoons each year are reserved for staff
development. A professional development plan is developed each spring for the
following year. This provides teachers with options to pursue in improving their teaching skills.
In addition to the programs offered in the district, teachers are encouraged to
participate in conferences and workshops off campus, as well as to enroll in course work
related to their professional goals. |
