AMERICAN
FIELD SERVICE (AFS)
AFS is a club
that supports the foreign student exchange program between students
who study abroad and foreign students who come to live and study in
Norwell. The club meets each week and club members enjoy presentations
by the AFS students learning about their culture, customs, and language.
Club members participate in several different activities during the
school year: field trips to the JFK library, Museum of Science, New
England Aquarium, Duck Tours, pizza parties, bowling parties, etc.
Strong friendships are created by visiting foreign students who participate
in these activities, making them feel welcome and a true part of the
Norwell school community
AMNESTY
INTERNATIONAL
Norwell High School's
chapter of Amnesty meets once a week to discuss current human rights'
issues. The group actively tries to combat human rights' violations
through letter campaigns (Urgent Actions), educating the Norwell community
through bulletin boards/library displays and participating in student
rallies. Students from all grades are invited to join weekly meetings.
ART CLUB The art club is open to all students and meets on alternate
Tuesdays. Activities are based on student interests. They plan and
organize activities such as: painting pumpkins, printing silk screen
tee shirts and field trips to local galleries and museums. Charitable
and service projects such as planting tulips on Norwell High School
grounds are also completed.
BEST
BUDDIES
Best Buddies is
an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with special
needs by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships. The Norwell
High School Best Buddies charter was established in the Fall of 2001.
A significant part of the high school experience is developing social
relationships with peers. Our goal is to provide social relationships
with high school students in regular and special education by matching
them in one-to-one pairs. The hope is to establish foundations for
genuine friendships, thus enriching the lives of both.
DIVERSITY-GAY/STRAIGHT
ALLIANCE
Members work to
promote respect towards people of a different race, religion, ethnic
group, or sexual orientation. The club participates in a number of
programs sponsored by The National Conference for Community and Justice,
such a "Into the Circle: Teens Teaching Inclusion; "Anytown," a week
long residential program that teaches issues of diversity and inclusion;
and the "Walk As One" to celebrate local diversity. Members work with
the Boston City Year organization in their Serve-A-Thon project, participating
in a day-long pledge event of community service. The group also works
closely with the Massachusetts Department of Education's Safe Schools
program, participating in the Gay/Straight Youth Pride March in Boston.
At the high school, the club sponsors assemblies that inform students
about issues related to tolerance, diversity and the value of service.
THE
ENVIRONMENT CLUB
The Environment
club is an organization dedicated to preserving the environment not
only in Norwell, but also in our state, country, and world. Members
are responsible for the school recycling program and for raising awareness
globally and locally about environmental issues. Activities include
beach clean ups, white water rafting trips and other environmental
events.
THE
MATH CLUB
The math club
is composed of students in grades 9-12 who enjoy solving challenging
math problems. Teams compete in the Southeastern Mass Mathematics
League in meets with neighboring schools. The meets take place after
school. In addition, students compete in the New England Mathematics
League, which involves taking a 30-minute quiz 6 times during the
school year. Math club members also have the opportunity to participate
in the American Mathematics Competition, a 75-minute exam administered
in February. There are also social activities that mainly involve
food and not math problems.
MOCK
TRIAL
Students
compete against other schools to win court trials at the Brockton
District Court. They act out the parts of lawyers and witnesses for
a trial provided by the Massachusetts Bar Association. The season
begins in November and ends in March. The team practices at least
once a week, more often as competitions approach. There are three
regular season competitions, more if the team makes it to the tournament.
Some knowledge of the law is preferred, but not necessary. Students
from all grades are welcome to try out for a place on the team, which
consists of 6-9 students.
THE
NORWELL NAVIGATOR
Norwell's Navigator
is a student run newspaper that is distributed five times per school
year to students, staff, and parents. The Navigator sells subscriptions
and advertisements to support it. Students write news, features, sports
and editorial articles, and they take pictures and draw comics. Generally,
we meet and plan one month before publication and every night the
week of publication. We are always looking for new writers, photographers,
and artists - so check it out!
PAINTBALL
CLUB
One of the newest
official clubs at NHS is the paintball club. Ms. Noiseux is the official
faculty advisor. The club sponsors after-school trips to local paintball
facilities. Students who participate learn valuable lessons about
sportsmanship and teamwork, and they have a lot of fun, too.
PEER
EDUCATION
Peer Educators
are substance free juniors and seniors who act as role models to their
peers and younger students. Peer educators are selected in the spring
and trained in substance abuse and violence prevention. Every month
they present a lesson to fifth grade students on how they resist peer
pressure to drink and use drugs. They also teach lessons in our Bullyproofing
program. Peer educators lead freshman groups in our Project School
Family program, and help run the freshman orientation program.
ROBOTICS
The Norwell Robotics
team is a group of students, both male and female, who work together
with the goal to build a robot. The team competes in regional and
national competitions. We work with a local engineer and a local machine
shop to build and fabricate parts for the robot, which has a six-
week time frame to be completed. Within the competitions there are
also contests which include essay writing and 3-D animation/video
production. As we travel to the regional and the national competitions,
we meet teams on the regional, national, and international level.
The Robotics team is a diverse group open to everyone.
STUDENT
GOVERNMENT
The Student Government
is a group of elected students who work with teachers, advisors and
other students to organize activities for the student body. Students
are elected to positions by their peers. Each class has five (5) delegates
with the senior class having six (6) delegate positions. The executive
board is composed of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.
Meetings are held every two weeks after school.
SURF
CLUB
Surf's up! See
Mr. Papadonis for information about our surfers and their incessant
California dreamin'.
YEARBOOK
The yearbook staff
is comprised of students interested in working on the annual yearbook
publication. Staff members choose the sections they would like to
work on that include business, senior section, candid pages, sports,
activities, clubs, faculty, and underclass sections. Students from
all grades are welcome to join.
YOUNG
DEMOCRATS/REPUBLICANS
Students with
an interest in politics may be interested in one of these groups.
Each group meets regularly to discuss current issues and plans events.
They have had events such as debates and campaigning. Students interested
in joining the Democrats should speak with Ms. Lozan. Those interested
in joining the Republicans should speak with Ms. Sharpe.
