Course: Spanish III Honors / College Prep

 

Student work will focus on the following NHS student expectations for learning: (expectations apply to both Honors and College Prep levels)

 

  • Use a variety of strategies for attaining knowledge
  • Use technology as a learning tool
  • Choose appropriate strategies and implement a plan of action
  • Compile, interpret and communicate data
  • Speak, write and present clearly, accurately and effectively in a variety of modes
  • Demonstrate tolerance, respect and empathy for others
  • Make connections among local, state, national and global issues
  • Take responsibility for their decisions and behavior       

 

Course expectations: (certain modifications and accommodations made for College Prep level)

 

  • Students will attend class daily
  • Students will arrive to class prepared with notebook, binder, writing utensil, text and workbook
  • Students will communicate effectively and appropriately in Spanish 
  • Students will listen attentively to peers, teacher and presented materials
  • Students will speak Spanish as much as possible with peers and teacher
  • Students will read and understand dialogues and narratives in Spanish
  • Students will write language that is comprehensible and expressive
  • Students will research and present various aspects of Spanish and Latin American culture
  • Students will complete approximately 30 minutes of homework nightly
  • Students will actively participate in class and the language lab 
  • Students will interact appropriately with and show respect towards peers and teacher
  • Students will demonstrate continual efforts to improve their Spanish knowledge and communication skills

 

Course skills/ concepts: (certain modifications and accommodations made for College Prep level)

 

§         Listen to and understand cultural, vocabulary and grammatical presentations

§         Take notes and keep them in an organized notebook for reference

§         Write a number of compositions, essays, poems and vignettes

  • Read excerpts from authentic texts in Spanish
  • Prepare and present group and individual projects

Homework policy/ major projects:

 

§         Students will have 30 minutes of written homework daily

§         Homework will be completed neatly

§         Students will do their own homework unless it is assigned as a group  assignment

§         Homework will be checked daily

§         One major project will be assigned each quarter

  • Group projects will occasionally be assigned
  • Extra credit points may be earned for linking the classroom with the Spanish speaking world; such as bringing in current news, actual artifacts and/or the lyrics of songs in Spanish and telling the class their significance
  • Make up work will be completed within three (3) days of return to school unless special arrangements are made 
  • with the teacher
  • Failure to make up work within prescribed time allotment will result in zero credit

 

Grading system:

 

Each homework assignment, project, test, quiz, vignette, oral presentation and classroom participation and preparedness has a point value assigned to it

Grade will be based on the total points accrued from daily assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, class participation and preparation

COURSE NAME:  Spanish 4 Honors/College Prep

 

 

STUDENT WORK WILL FOCUS UPON THE FOLLOWING NHS EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT LEARNING: (expectations apply to both honors and college prep levels)

 

  • Use a variety of strategies for attaining knowledge
  • Choose appropriate strategies and implement a plan of action
  • Speak, write, read, interpret and listen clearly, accurately and effectively in a variety of modes
  • Demonstrate tolerance, respect and empathy for others
  • Make connections among local, state, national and global issues
  • Take responsibility for their decisions and behaviors
  • Use technology as a learning tool

 

 

Course Expectations: (certain modifications and accommodations made for college prep level)

 

  • Students will attend class daily
  • Students will arrive to class on time prepared with notebook, writing utensil, text and notebook
  • Students will effectively communicate in Spanish with peers and teacher
  • Students will read authentic texts (from both Latin America and Spain) covering a variety of cultural themes
  • Students will improve on their writing skills in Spanish by writing more clearly, accurately and persuasively
  • Students will understand Spanish when spoken by the teacher or native speaker in class, on TV programs, on cultural videos, recorded music and audio tapes and cds
  • Students will complete 30-45 minutes of homework and outside studying each day

 

 

COURSE SKILLS/CONCEPTS: (skills/concepts apply to both honors and college prep levels with some variations and accommodations made in college prep level)

 

  • Listen to and understand cultural, vocabulary and grammatical presentations in Spanish
  • Take notes and keep them in an organized notebook for reference
  • Write a number of short compositions, lengthier essays, poems and vignettes based on cultural themes, thematic vocabulary and readings done in class
  • Prepare group projects or individual as per assigned by the teacher
  • Read authentic texts in Spanish including, but not limited to, news articles, poetry, short stories and fragments from Hispanic novels
  • Review and improve upon grammatical structures and vocabulary from previous years’ study of Spanish

 

 

MAJOR UNITS:  (accompanied by short readings in authentic texts of short stories, excerpts from novels, essays, poetry, newspapers articles)

 

Review of Spanish grammar

Study the culture and current events of Spanish speaking countries

Historical and cultural places of interest in Latin America and Spain

Daily routines and interests of Hispanic teenagers living in different areas of the Hispanic world

Major passages in an individual’s life (birth, baptism/bat mitzvah/confirmation, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, marriage, divorce, retirement, divorce)

Conquest and colonization of the Americas

Cultural values (family, honor, individuality, generosity, materialism, nationalism)

Health and well being

Ethnic heritages in Latin America and Spain (indigenous cultures, African, Arabic, European)

Pre-Colombian civilizations (Aztecs, Mayans, Incas, araucanos, tainos, etc.)

Spain: history, geographical and political divisions, major cities, culture and language

HOMEWORK POLICY/MAJOR PROJECTS

 

  • Students will have 30-45 minutes of homework daily
  • Students will have homework done in an orderly and assigned manner.
  • Homework will be checked on a daily basis
  • Major projects will be assigned at different times of the school year to be completed individually or collaboratively and will be expected to be completed on the assigned date
  • Make up work will be completed within three (3) days of return to school unless special arrangements are made with the teacher directly
  • Failure to make up work with prescribed time allotment will result in failing grade for test or quiz and no credit for incomplete or unrecorded homework

 

GRADING SYSTEM:

 

Each homework assignment, project, test, quiz, vignette, oral presentation and daily classroom behavior, participation and preparedness has a point value associated with it.

Grade will be based on the total points accrued from daily assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, classroom participation and behavior.
