Course:                       Health / Physical Education Electives - The physical education program continues in the junior and senior year with the opportunity to explore physical activity and health topics in depth.  Students may choose strength training, yoga / pilates, or lifetime activities.

 

Student work will focus on the following NHS student expectations for learning:

Lifetime Activities – Reflective Problem Solvers, Responsible Citizens

Strength Training – Effective Listeners, Responsible Citizens

Yoga – Effective Listeners, Adaptable Learners

 

Course expectations:

·        Students will be required to change into sneakers, athletic shorts, and a Tee shirt every class.

·        Students will be required to participate in all activities for a given class.

·        Students must demonstrate a positive attitude towards fellow classmates while participating in the activities.

·        Students will improve physically and mentally throughout the course.

·        Grading

o       Yoga – 65% Participation – 10% Fitness Test – 25% Ability to retain and instruct moves and poses.

o       Strength Training – 65% Participation – 10% Fitness Test – 25% Developing a personal workout plan.

o       Lifetime Activities – 90% Participation – 10% Fitness Test   

 

 

 

Course skills / concepts:

Strength Training, 1.25 cr.

Open to students interested in improving themselves in the area of fitness, strength, agility, and flexibility. The class includes use of free weights, universal weight machines, and cardio equipment. 

 

Lifetime Activities, 1.25 cr.

Open to students interested in exploring a deep understanding and improving their skill level in the following lifetime activities:  Volleyball, golf, strength training, yoga, tennis, badminton, walking and jogging. The course features varied levels of competition. Emphasis is placed upon improving basic skills and strengthening habits of teamwork and sportsmanship.

 

Yoga / Pilates / Lifetime Fitness, 1.25 cr.

This unit will emphasize mind/body awareness as students increase their level of fitness through yoga, pilates, and a walking program geared to their fitness level. Yoga will be an integral part of the program as a means of becoming aware of muscle tension and increasing the student’s ability to relax and relieve stress. Specific exercises will be done for stretching and strengthening muscles, keeping joints mobile, and aiding the functioning of organs. The students will also participate in some muscular tests which will reveal everyday connections between the mind and body.  Finally, the students will explore pilates as a means to strengthen their core.

 

    • Reflective Problem Solvers (Lifetime Activites) – Students will use various approaches to gather and thoroughly identify information and knowledge.  Students will also demonstrate a broad repertoire of strategies consistent with the unit.  Finally, the students will gain the ability to reflect on strategies, demonstrate how strategies work, and convince others of the strategy’s validity. 
    • Responsible Citizens (Volleyball / Strength Training) – Students will model respect for individuals and property, display honest behavior while taking responsibility for their own actions, and learn the life skill of being on time to class meetings ready to participate at a high level of intensity and enthusiasm.
    • Effective Listeners (Strength Training / Yoga) – Students will have the ability to ask clarifying and interpretive questions while identifying areas for improvement and communicating them to the instructor during the appropriate time.  In addition, the students will demonstrate attention and focus on the speaker’s body language and eye contact while sitting still and facing the speaker.  Finally, the students will be able to identify a challenging goal and recognize when goals should be adapted.
    • Adaptable Learners (Yoga) – Students will learn from successes and mistakes and show personal growth by applying prior knowledge.  Furthermore, they will respond well to constructive criticism and use feedback to make changes towards a goal.  Finally, the students will be able to learn in through various teaching styles, group dynamics, and in different physical environments.

Freshman and Sophomore Health / Physical Education, 1.25 cr.

The Health curriculum uses a variety of techniques designed to teach students refusal skills, assertiveness, and responsible decision-making. Students practice these skills by role playing, class presentations, and in classroom discussions. The aim of the curriculum is not only to impart valuable information to the students, but also to give them the skills to behave safely and responsibly throughout their lives. The health topics covered include alcohol, tobacco and drug education, family life education including the anatomy and physiology of human reproduction, and the values clarifying the decision-making skills needed for responsible behavior. Sex roles, and sexual identity, teen relationships, and gender respect are also covered. Other topics include understanding HIV, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Nutrition, diet, weight control, and eating disorders are studied in depth. Students also will learn about emotional health as it pertains to depression, stress, body image, and suicide prevention. The health curriculum implements the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework.

 

The Physical Education curriculum introduces students to the basic skills and strategies of a variety of athletic and recreational activities. These activities may include large group/small group as well as dual or individual endeavors. Emphasis is placed on fitness (cardiovascular and muscular) and an introduction to lifetime activities throughout the course.  Some activities that students participate in are weight training, fundamentals of cardiovascular training and testing, project adventure, badminton, tennis, volleyball, yoga, and golf.
