Hi all - As you know, Boosters has
committed $75,000 this year to Norwell High School Athletics. Our
contribution has prevented cuts to programs and allowed for all sports
to be funded under NHS Athletics- but we cannot depend on a
few to raise the money needed to continue our mission.
Our largest fundraiser, the annual
golf tournament is scheduled for May 8th (flier attached). We are in
need of hole sponsers and most importantly auction
items for this event. We all need to do our part -
Do you have tickets to Celtics, Red Sox,
Patriots, Bruins, etc? Concert tickets, vacation homes, etc are also
very popular items.
Please - consider a donation -
personally or from your company to support the student athletes at
Norwell High School.

Men’s Night Out was a great success! Thanks to Tom Miller and Chris Mazzeo for
co-chairing this event. Approximately 100 men attended the event which included
NCAA basketball, live and silent auctions and food and drink.
Technology Recycling Day will be held on Saturday April 26th from 9-2 in front
of Sparrell School. So - clear your garage, attic, basement… of unwanted
computers, tvs and appliances and drop them off for only $15-$30/item. The
Boosters will receive 60% of the proceeds as opposed to last year’s take of 70%.
The Boosters annual Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday May 8th at Widow’s
Walk in Scituate. If interested in playing, please contact Chip Ennis at
chip17@comcast.net. We also are still interested in obtaining items for the live and silent auction. If you can help us out by donating
something (tickets, vacation homes, services…), please contact us as soon as
possible.
The Patriots basketball game will be held on Wednesday May 21st. Phone calls to
town residents are underway and tickets are going fast. The Boosters will be
running the concession stand that evening as well as selling 50/50 raffle tix.
Please let us know if you can help.

Follows are Minutes from the March Boosters Meeting. The April meeting
will be held Tuesday 4/1 immediately following the Spring Coaches'
meeting. Those meetings will start at 7 and should run about 45 minutes.
NORWELL HIGH SCHOOL BOOSTERS
Minutes from 3/11/08 Meeting
A motion was made to accept the February minutes as written; seconded and
approved.
The treasurer’s report was read. Motion was made to accept; seconded and
approved.
Marybeth thanked both Joan Stravinsky and Patti Aizenstadt for their work
chairing the concession stand for the boys’ and girls’ basketball games
this
winter. Thanks to all who volunteered their time.
The donor recognition plaques will be done next month and installed down
at the
snack shack. These plaques will recognize those individuals who made
major
contributions – either monetarily or with their time and talent – in
helping to
reconstruct our concession stand down by the football field.
Gerry met with both Scott Paine and Matt Keegan to discuss the Sports
Awards
Night. In the past Boosters had sponsored a night at the conclusion of
each sports season to
recogni ze our student-athletes. A committee was formed to look into all
options and it was voted to change that and also to reconsider junior
jackets. As a result, the awards night will be handled by the school and
this year, there will be one Sports Award Night held on May 28th to honor
those athletes who have earned a varsity letter in any sport during the
’07-’08
academic year. The freshmen, sophs and juniors will receive the varsity
letter(s) they have
earned this year. Seniors will be recognized for all the sports they have
played during their high school years.
Cindy DeBenedictis did some research on varsity jackets. She brought
samples of
two different styles to the meeting with pricing for each. We decided
that the
jacket with the wool sleeves and the appliqué lettering will be our
varsity
jacket. At the awards night on 5/28, an order form will be enclosed w i
th each
varsity letter earned. Jackets may be ordered at Rockland Athletics,
with the
financial responsibility up to each individual.
The Spring Sports Teams Meetings will be mandatory for all
student-athletes and
their parents and will be held on Tuesday April 1st at 7 pm. There will
be
a Boosters representative at each team meeting to talk about the
fundraising responsibility of each team. Our focus this spring is on the
golf tourney and we need everyone’s help – either with the
donation of an auction item or being/getting a hole sponsor, playing in
the
tourney or coming to the dinner and bidding on the auction items.
Chip Ennis, co-chair of the Boosters golf tourney, emphasized that we need
people to step forward with donations of auction items. Sports tickets, a
week/weekend at a vacation home and concert tickets are always sought
after
items. We need foursomes and people to w o rk at the registration table,
the
hole-in-one hole and at Scituate CC setting up the silent auction items.
Please
offer to help in any way you can – we need everyone’s help to make this
the most
successful golf tourney yet!
Men’s Night Out will be held at the Cushing Center on Thursday night March
27th
in conjunction with the NCAA basketball tourney. There will be food and
drink
and the auctioning off of a 50” HD flatscreen television. Tickets are
$50/person.
Technology Recycling Day will be held on Saturday April 26th. If you have
any
tvs, computers, monitors, printers…that you want to get rid of, this is
your
chance. For $10/item, you can have them recycled by bringing them up to
the
Sparrell School between 8 am and noon.
The Patriots Basketball Game will be in the Norwell High School gym on
Wednesday
May 21st. The fundraising company has begun to make calls to Norwell
residents
to se ll tickets to the game. Last year, we made m ore than $10,000 at
this same
event.
Athletic Director’s Report
Scott announced that the South Shore Principal’s Meet will be held at NHS
on
Saturday May 24th with 15-20 towns competing. We will need lots of help
at this
event. Also, the All-League meet is scheduled for Wednesday May 21st. Due
to a
conflict with the Patriots basketball game that we already have scheduled
for that date, Scott
has requested a change to Thursday 5/22. If a date change is not
possible, the
venue may have to change.
Motion was made to adjourn; seconded and approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Helm |
NORWELL HIGH SCHOOL BOOSTERS
Minutes from 1/8/08 Meeting
The meeting began with a motion to accept the December minutes as
written;
seconded and approved. The treasurer’s report was read. Motion to
accept was
made, seconded and approved.
Old Business
Spring Fundraisers –
The Patriots Basketball Game will be held on Wednesday May 21st.
This was a
very successful event last year raising over $10,000 for the Boosters
organization.
The Boosters annual golf tourney will be the second Thursday in May
at
Widow’s Walk golf course in Scituate. We will need players, hole
sponsors and
live and silent auction items.
Men’s Night Out will be the fundraiser run by boys’ basketball. This
will be
held at the Cushing Center with a tentative date of March 27. There
will be
cigars, a buffet dinner, live and silent auction items and more.
We will be hostin g the boys’ and girls’ basketball all-star games on
February
15th. The girls’ game will be held at 6 pm and the boys’ game at 8 pm.
The
South Shore league will get the gate receipts for the event, but the
Boosters will hold a
50/50 raffle and benefit from that as well as the snack bar proceeds.
Donor recognition plaques are in the works for people who donated time
and
materials to help us rebuild our snack shack.
The Jackets, Letters and Awards Committee will meet in the coming month
to
discuss how to recognize letter winners from here on. If you would like
to be a
part of this group, please contact Gerry Good.
New Business
Boosters Scholarships – In past years, the Boosters have awarded $1,000
scholarships to three graduating seniors. The criteria used in the past
to
award these scholarships have been involvement in sports, GPA and
extracurriculars. A subgroup (Tim Kane, Dave Kitchen and Gail Conley)
will meet
to reevaluate the criteria and report back to us at the next meeting.
Board Member Search Committee – Mary Beth is looking for 3 or 4 people
to go out
and look for new Boosters officers. The entire board is stepping down
at the end of the year and we need new blood to continue our efforts.
Jenna
Verrocchi has volunteered to help draft some people.
The Halyard, our school magazine, has asked for a donation. Motion to
donated
$200 was m/s/a.
The Norwell Navigator newspaper also asked for our support. Motion was
made to
spend $100/issue, 3 issues per year to run ad for the Boosters
organization in
the Navigator; motion carried. We will be able to use this space as a
marketing
page for the Boosters while supporting our school paper.
The Turf field meeting date is yet to be announced. We need
to show support for this group. Stay tuned for more info.
Ath letic Director’s Update
Norwell High hosted the girls’ Lapel’s basketball tourney this year
during
Christmas vacation. It was a great tournament. We netted approx.
$1,000 and
feel that it could be even more successful if we move the games to
nighttime for
next year.
Lapel will also sponsor a boys’ tourney at Norwell starting next
February
with Rockland, Marshfield and Pembroke joining Norwell in the games.
The trainer’s room is done and all secure. Our trainer, LeeAnn, has had
knee
surgery, but will be back for the spring season. We will need to
purchase a new
ice machine for the room.
While the fall coaches meetings went great, the winter meetings were
very poorly
attended. In the past, these meetings have been tied in with the
previous
season’s sports award nights. This year, with no fall awards
presentations, the
number of people attending dropped dramatically. Scott s a id the
spring coaches
meetings will be mandatory and he will do a separate mailing to all
student
athletes with the date and times of the meetings.
Scott said there has to be some system in place for student athletes to
receive
their letters/awards now that we have discontinued the awards nights.
Some
coaches did distribute letters to the athletes on their teams; some did
not.
Unfortunately, Scott still has a big box of letters and certificates in
his
office. If your son/daughter has not received their letter/certificate
from the fall
season, please leave Scott an email at
paine@norwellschools.org.
Scott announced that Norwell High has received the ‘06-’07 Dalton award
for
Division 4 teams. This is awarded to the scho o l with the highest
winning
percentage for all sports combined during the year. NHS has won this 5
times.
Scott will order a new banner for the gym. He will also order the state
champs/sectional banners.
Motion to adjourn; seconded and approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Helm

NORWELL HIGH SCHOOL BOOSTERS
Minutes from 12/4/07 Meeting
Marybeth called the meeting to order. A motion was made to accept the November
minutes as written; seconded and approved. The treasurer’s report was read;
motion to accept m/s/a.
Marybeth reported that the Jacket, Letter, Awards subcommittee will meet again
in January.
The winter sports meetings were held on Wednesday Nov. 28th and were poorly
attended. One of the reasons for meeting that night was to explain to parents
the fundraisers that their sons/daughters sports teams were being asked to do.
Marybeth will put out an email asking for help in manning the gates and 50/50 tables
at the boys and girls basketball games. The boys’ basketball team will hold a
men’s night in March as their team’s fundraiser.
A.D.’s Report
Scott reported that the trainer’s room is finally done. The unfortunate news is
that our athletic trainer has had knee surgery and will not be working for a few
months.Scott also reported that Norwell has been invited to join the Patriot League.
There is also the possibility of a new league forming with some of our
surrounding towns making travel costs much less than they are at this point.
Matt Keegan and Scott will be looking at this further and talking with other
schools. No decision is imminent.
Marybeth Shea will be completing her term as president of Boosters in June, as
will the rest of the board. We are looking for some new blood to take over the
reins for the next couple years. If interested in learning more about Boosters,
please come to a meeting or call Marybeth.
Kevin Finneran filled us in on the latest developments with the turf field study
committee. This committee has presented a preliminary proposal to the CPC –
Community Preservation Committee – asking them for $700,000 to go towards the
building of a multi-use turf field in Norwell. The committee would then need to
fundraise the remaining $200,000 needed to get the field built. There will be a
presentation on Thursday January 24th in the high school auditorium for anyone interested in learning more about
this proposal. Please come and support us.
This is so important for the sports teams in town, not only at Norwell High, but
all the youth teams as well. The study committee needs the approval of the CPC
at this meeting to get the proposal put on the warrant for town meeting in the
spring. The $700,000 that the committee is hoping to receive from the CPC is tax money
that the CPC has already set aside. It is available, but will need to be voted
on.Please show your support for the turf field!
A motion was made to adjourn; seconded and approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Helm

NORWELL HIGH SCHOOL BOOSTERS
Minutes from November 6, 2007
Gerry Good called the
meeting to order. There was a motion to accept the
October minutes as written; seconded and approved. Jean Hoffman read the
treasurer’s report. Motion was made to accept; seconded and approved.
Old Business
Corporate Sponsorships – Gerry thanked Jeff Helm for all his work in
coordinating the painting and installing of sponsorship signs. We have
two new
sponsors this month.
A plaque will be made up naming other sponsors over the last few years and
installed ASAP. The sponsorship signs for the gym should be installed
mid-November. Any interest in sponsoring the Norwell Clippers? If so,
email
gerrygood@comcast.net
Homecoming – Many thanks to Gail Conley for chairing a most successful
Homecoming event. The rain held off for the parade at halftime of the
football
game and the decorations in the gym were fabulous. Many students said it
was
the best dance ever at Norwell High.
Jackets/Letters/Awards Committee – The JLA committee still has to meet
again to further discuss
junior jackets and senior sports awards night. Each sports team will have
its
own banquet.
New Business
Winter Sports Meet the Coaches Night will be held on Wednesday, November
28th.
A Boosters representative will be at each individual team meeting to p
rese nt the
fundraising assignment for that team.
Girls Basketball Concessions – We are looking for someone to coordinate
the
concessions at the girls’ home games. If interested, please call Mary
Beth
Shea. Any questions about
what is involved, give Joan Stravinsky a call.
Athletic Director’s Report
The trainer’s room is just about set. All that is needed are doorknobs
and
locks. Unfortunately, however, our trainer has suffered a torn ACL…
Scott asked if there were any volunteers to once again help at the
basketball
games. We need someone to handle the scoreboard and shot clock and
another
person for the scorebooks. Volunteers would need to be able to stay for 3
consecutive games – from 3:15 to approx. 8:15 pm. If able and willing,
please get in touch with the athletic office.
Thanks!
A motion was made to adjourn; seconded and approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Helm
Minutes from the October 2, 2007 Meeting
A motion was made to accept the September minutes as written; seconded and
approved.Jean Hoffman read the treasurer’s report. Motion was made to accept
as read; seconded and approved.
Old Business
Corporate Sponsorships – The new signs are to be installed on the
football
stands facing the soccer field by the October 12th football game v. Hull.
There
have been 14 sponsorships purchased; more are available. Please contact
Gerry
Good @
gerrygood@comcast.net if interested. Marybeth thanked Gerry Good and
Jeff Helm for all their work in getting this done.
Homecoming Update – Gail Conley is once again chairing this event. Th e
football game (and parade of the Homecoming Court) will be held on Friday,
Oct.
19th and the Homecoming dance on Sat. 10/20. Gail still needs volunteers to
help with decorating the gym on Saturday morning beginning at 8 am. Also
needed
are chaperones at the dance (7:30 pm – 11 pm) and clean-up crew (from 11 pm
-). If you can help out or have any questions, please contact Gail at
conleyfamily5@comcast.net. If you can help with supplying refreshments,
please email Jean Hoffman at
hoffman.jean@comcast.net. This is a great opportunity to meet new
people and
get involved at the school. Please join us!
Jackets/Letters/Awards Nights – Gerry Good headed up a subcommittee to
discuss how we should continue with these three traditions at Norwell High.
Traditionally, each junior involved in athletics receives a jacket from the
Boosters organization at the (fall/ winter/spring) sports award night.
These
jackets have cost the Boosters approximately $6,000/year.
The subcommittee decided that we should no longer award these jackets to
juniors because the jackets are really not worn much by the students and our
financial needs are very different this year. This is the year to make the
change. Teams may purchase individual team jackets/warm-ups (with the
approval
of our AD)… but will be responsible for the cost themselves. There will
also be NHS
clothing and gear on sale in the student-run store.
It was also decided to discontinue each season’s Sports Awards Night.
This
was the night when each student-athlete was recognized for their
participation
in a sport at NHS. The subcommittee recommended that there be a Senior
Sports
Awards Night held each spring to award Letters earned, with bars, stars,
etc…for
a student’s entire four years at NHS. There was a discussion as to how we
should acknowledge special accomplishments, all-stars, etc…, now that we
will
not be having the awards ceremonies. The committee will meet again to
discuss
this further. Anyone interested in joining this committee should contact
Gerry Good at
gerrygood@comcast.net
Individual team banquets will be allowed to continue as they have been
done
i n the past. This is when coaches can honor their all-stars and
congratulate
all team members on their seasons. The banquets’ expenses will be the
responsibilities of the families involved.
A motion was m/s/a to discontinue sports award nights.
Motion was also made to discontinue the junior jackets; seconded and
approved. We talked briefly about possibilities – offering boathouse
jackets to juniors
at our cost; offering boathouse jackets to juniors at a subsidized cost;
offering lettermen’s jackets to juniors at a subsidized cost.
There are still a few $100 tickets left in the $10,000 Raffle. The winning
ticket will be drawn at halftime of the Homecoming football game.
New Business
Basketball Concessions – Joan Stravinsky will handle the concession stand
for
the boys’ games this year and will be doing the purchasing/restocking, etc…
We
are lookin g for a volunteer to be responsible for the girls’ games. This
would
be for opening/closing up the concession stand, scheduling volunteers to
staff
the stand each game and being responsible for the cash box. If interested,
please contact Mary Beth at
mbsh1@comcast.net.
Athletic Director’s Report
The Patriots Basketball game has been scheduled for Wednesday May 21st.
Progress has stalled on the trainer’s room.
Scott mentioned a website that lists all towns’ athletic fees. If
interested
in checking this out, it is
www.supered.com.
Scott wants to thank all who have volunteered at the games. This is
saving
the town lots of money and let ti ng the money be spent where we want it –
on the
kids.
Also, a big thank you to Marybeth Shea for all the work she has put in
and
to getting us where we are today!!!!
Motion was made to adjourn; seconded and approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Helm

NHS BOOSTERS
Minutes from 9/11/07 Meeting
Marybeth Shea introduced the Boosters officers and our school principal,
Matt
Keegan.A motion was made to accept the June minutes as written; seconded and
approved.Jean Hoffman read the treasurer’s report. Marybeth explained that
although we
have sufficient funds for the athletic programs this year, we need to raise
money a year in advance. Motion was made to accept the treasurer’s report;
seconded and approved.
Corporate Sponsorships – A new fundraising venture this year has been to
sell
corporate sponsorships. Signs with the corporate name, logo, etc. will be
posted at the football/soccer fields, on the scoreboard and in the
gymnasium.
The cost is $1,000/year for a 3-1/2’ x 4’ sign (on the football stands) and
$5,000 for a big sign on the top of the football scoreboard. The two in the
gym
have already been sold for this year. Sales are going well. If interested,
contact Gerry Good @
gerrygood@comcast.net.
Homecoming – Gail Conley has agreed to chair this huge event once again, but
would like as many helpers as she can get. The theme for this year’s dance
is music.
Volunteers are still needed for: coordinating the cars for the Homecoming
court
at halftime of the football game, decorations for the dance, volunteers for
set-up all day on Saturday and breakdown after the dance (11 pm-midnight).
Ticket price will change to $15.00 this year and tickets will be sold during
lunch Homecoming week.
Team Fundraising – Starting this year, each sports team must be responsible
for
one fundraiser per year – with the proceeds going di rectly into the
Boosters
treasury for our contribution to the athletic budget. Specific fundraisers
have
been assigned to each team.
Discussion followed regarding junior jackets, given each year by the
Boosters,
the sports awards ceremonies held each season, individual teams’ banquets
and
the excess of t-shirts and warm-ups ordered each season by individual
teams.
What standards should we set? Now is the time to set new policies…. Gerry
Good will chair a subcommittee to meet two weeks from tonight to discuss
these issues and report back at our next meeting.
Matt Keegan announced that there will be a Leadership Summit held on Monday
10/8 –
Tuesday 10/9 for athletic captains, National Honor Society officers and
Student
Govt. officers at Thompson Island. They will also discuss the above issues
and
report to us on their ideas.
A question was raised as to how much money is spent per sport and how it is
det e rmined. Our athletic budget is controlled by the Athletic Director,
Scott Paine. The
budgets differ/sport. If you have any questions re: where is our money
going,
athletic user fees, etc., please contact Scott in the athletic office. To
see
the recommendations put forth by the Athletic Study Committee, go to
Norwellschools.org and click on Athletic Study Committee.
Sovereign Bank has generously donated $5,000 to the NHS Boosters. The
presentation of this check will be made at their new branch on Washington
Street on Wed. 9/12 at 5 pm.
The Boosters are selling raffle tickets to the $10,000 raffle. Only 200
tickets
will be sold at $100 each. The drawing will be at halftime of the
Homecoming
Football Game on 10/19.
Concession stand prices have been raised slightly this year. Our prices
have
been consistently lower than most of the other schools and, this year, more
than
e ve r, it’s time we make a little profit from all the hard work that is
poured
into the snack shack.
Athletic Director’s Report
Scott announced he is need of an announcer at the football games. Gerry
Good
volunteered and will start on Friday night. Progress is finally being made
on the trainer’s room. Once the walls are secured, the equipment will be
moved in.
Scott thanked everyone who worked the opening fall sports barbecue! It was
great to see so many new faces! There will not be a Freshmen Summit this
year. It was just too expensive for some schools to travel here.
Motion was made to adjourn; seconded and approved.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Helm
